Knowing the Rules Only Gets You ... Hidden Giggles?

I walked downstairs this morning to find Owen, sitting on the coffee table. He looked over, realized he'd been caught, grinned from ear to ear, looked his self over and said emphatically, "No sitting on the table, Me."

Moving on UP

A spot (finally!) opened in the Preschool class, and Owen transititioned up over the last week! He'll be starting preschool fulltime Tuesday morning! We are so excited!!

First of all, we love the preschool teacher. Miss Lori is calm and sensitive and so in-tune with this extremely developmental time in our children's lives. She pays very close attention to their levels and provides opportunity to push and encourage them to continue challenging and learning. When Collin was in her class, I met with her frequently for ideas and to watch her work with the children. Collin really blossomed, and I found inspiration and insight! I can't wait to watch and discover the ways Owen will now grow in her care.

Second of all, all of the kids in this class are potty-training! After two months in Miss Lori's class, Collin was fully potty-trained. We sure hope Owen meets the same results!!

Good luck in your new class, Owen!

NW Washington Fair 8.15.08

Do you have a cow impression?? I looked over at Collin as we were checking out the cows and thought for certain he'd had too much fair food and was going to be sick. I asked, "Collin, are you ok? What are you doing?" He smiled and said, "I'm being a cow, of course!" And I just knew it was time to post a video. Enjoy!

We spent a wonderful afternoon at the fair this year on Collin's birthday, joined by Jacqui and Chris! One of my favorite features at this fair is the Toddler Field, littered with FREE games for kids, including the bean-bag toss, ring toss, fishing games, etc! What fun! But even more fun was the Science Hall, where the boys enjoyed manipulating the many stations:

Even still, the most fun of all were the cows. Rows and rows of cows. We spent so much time hanging with the cows that the only other animals we saw were the rabbits (after which, Owen crouched down on the ground and hopped like a rabbit, "ribbet"ting like a frog, for an entire aisle).
Collin played the cows a tune on the horn he found in Little Boy Blue's haystack:
Collin: Mom, stop! Take a picture of us HERE! (... in the horse trailer!)

It was over 90 degrees, and we all were sweating in the hot, glorious sun!
Owen: Hey, where are the keys?
Collin: Hang on, Owie! I'm driving us to the store!

June Pics (in August at last!)

Hey, Owen?! (Hey, What?) Show me how you Bug-a-loo!!

Owen was extra careful as he made Kevin's Father's Day card this year, adding extra color and extra love. He spent over ten minutes on the blank card until it was absolutely perfect!

Grandma J made the boys Super Capes in early June! Look at Collin fly!

What a big month! Owen learned to ride his bike on Father's Day! In his inaugural ride, Owen wouldn't take his eyes off his feet and the pedals ~ he was so fascinated by the results they were accomplishing!

Grandpa J and Grandpa Bob joined us for Father's Day. Here Kate is wishing Grandpa Bob a Happy Grand-Father's Day!

We have a Wii ~ and we love it. But no one more than Collin, who LOVES the many sports and activities on Wii Sports and Wii Fit. In this pic, he's bowling (see the hop as he releases the ball!); he bowled a 211 that game!

2 and 1/2 Months

We usually do the Woodland Park Zoo for Mother's Day each year, but this year, you may remember, the boys were super-sick. So June 27, I claimed my raincheck, and we had an awesome day!

On the Move

She's rolling! Sunday Kate started rolling across her blanket, traversing maybe a foot or two. Monday she started rolling towards toys. By today, she had mastered rolling across a room floor, around chairs, under tables and benches, etc. Activity gyms are useless this week because once she's laid on the ground, she's off! She prefers rolling to her tummy so she can see and scoot. Yep, scoot. She's turning, she's scooting, she's moving. No joke. Four months tomorrow.

I just looked in on her in her bed, and it was the first time I'd walked in and she wasn't asleep in essentially the same place I'd laid her. Instead, she had turned her whole body 90 degrees, had a toe poking through the crib bar, and had rolled to her tummy. She was zonked and comfy ~ and she'd gotten that way all on her own.

I got a tad emotional. My baby is already losing her "baby-ness." Collin flipped over at 3 months like Kate, but Owen didn't really (consistently) until he was 5 months. Neither rolled. In fact, neither boy really moved outside the radius of their flip-flop until they started crawling and cruising around 8 months. Kate's movements are astounding me! I am blown away watching her, and she is so proud! Big dimpled-grin from ear to ear each time she reaches her destination and we acknowledge her success!

Speaking of growing (mommy) pains, Kate's maturing daily! She's now pausing during feeds to lift her head and check the scene when she hears good distractions. And oh, is she a social butterfly! Except - again a sign that she's losing her "babyness" - she's beginning to show emotional signs of attachment and crying when she's not being held by those she knows best (a toughie for a mom who asks colleagues to watch her baby in the hallways during court hearings ~ this week I had to argue a motion while Kate cried her lungs out in the hall, knowing that if I walked out there, I could make everything ok. *As soon as the Commissioner made her ruling and before the order was passed and signed, I darted for the hall and Kate joined me in the courtroom happily, cooing for the record.)

Kate was singing in the back of the van on the way to work this morning. I kid you not. Collin heard it too. She sang (to Country music!) nearly 15 minutes. It was adorable and hilarious!

Seriously?

Owen just threw up all over the upstairs landing. I rushed to the top of the stairs and held his shivering, burning body as he uploaded into the porcelain bowl. We're a "sick house" again. Or still??

I'm wondering ... many families choose to live on one-parent incomes ... is it because they know one parent will be required to be at home with sick children so often? If Owen's illness lasts as long as Collin's did, Kevin will have worked "part time" (at home with a sick child, making phone calls at the kitchen table in between bouts of "Cars" and tummy rumbles) more than half of the past 30 days. Add in that it happened to be our vacation month, and that means he'll have been able to work full time one week in the past month ... and we'll have paid daycare for two kids full time for the whole month (whether they attended or not). Doesn't really add up ...

We are truly so fortunate to be in the positions we are, working the jobs we do. I know we'd make it in another boat, but I can't see how we'd really stay afloat.

By the way, Thank You, Kevin, for cleaning up the landing. : )

Got "Big Kid" Milk?

COLLIN: I'm not drinking Cow's milk anymore. I don't like the taste.
ME: Oh, yeah? [Coming from a boy who, on his own, has consistently drank a minimum of 2 gallons of milk a week, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in anticipation of what he might say next!]
COLLIN: Yeah. Babies drink Mommy's milk. Little kids drink cow's milk. I'm almost four, so I'm only going to drink chocolate milk!

Should I tell him we just add sugar-free chocolate syrup to his non-fat cow's milk?! Oh boy ... : )

Vacation Success!

- Pediatricians Saturday morning: check.
- Ferry by 2:00 that afternoon: check.
- Camping in a tent with three kids under 4 in (lots of) rain and shine: check.
- Outhouse: check.
- Beachcombing for shells, glass, baby rock crab: check. (Collin's "heaven on earth" is Pebble Beach.)
- Digging a tunnel to China: attempted (check).
- Having quality 1:1 time with my kids: check.
- Spending quality 1:1 time with my hubby: check.
- Running (almost) daily runs with the kids in the jogger (who, to my delight, fought for their "turns" in the buggy; Kate got to go every time in case I detoured on a beach too long and needed to feed her): check.
- Finishing a novel I started over a month ago: check (ok, finished it tonight after the kids went to sleep; only read 6 pages on the vacation.)
- And the last on my "vacation goal" list was to lose 1 pound AND STILL eat and drink to my heart's content (hence, the running goal): CHECK! ... I lost 2.2 pounds and ate a whole package of Nutter Butters in two days! : )

Now it's back to reality ...

Lavender Reminder

We had planned to spend an adventurous and relaxing 10 days camping in the San Juans ~ our big vacation for the year. So far, we're still on fever watch.

Only now, we're watching all three. Last night, as we were finishing the last of the packing and I was tossing the kids into their last warm bath for a week (camping has a warm, quick, sporadic shower!), I realized that Collin, who had not had a fever for nearly 18 blessed hours, was spiking again: 101.6.

Since the other two were right there, I checked them too: Owen 100.4; Kate 99.4.
To be fair, Kate has run 99.3 and 99.4 the whole week, which by pediatric standards is not a fever in an infant (*has to be over 100.4). But Owen is exactly 100.4. Nonetheless, Owen is not acting sick in any way. If I hadn't taken his temp, I would never have known (perhaps more fussy, but he's also very much a two-year old at the moment so the tears and tantrums come quick - luckily so do the hugs and giggles!)

So anyway, they bathed, and Collin broke into chills. Two hours later, his fever broke and he slept "soundly" (*talks in his sleep) and sleeps still (it's 7:15 a.m.). He did wake around 6 and ask to load up for the ferry to go camping ~ even he is "sick" of postponing (plus I'm certain he has some cabin-fever as he's been holed up in the house a full week today). I told him to go back to sleep so he'd be really healthy and have lots of energy to play on the beach.

Now it's assessment time. As I said, Collin broke his fever sometime around 11 p.m. But he went almost 18 hours yesterday. Do we try to go camping and "hope" that it's really over this time? Owen doesn't feel warm, slept all night soundly, and is downstairs - dressed and ready to go. Kate woke twice (not her norm) but isn't running a fever and is still sleeping. *Did I mention that she threw up earlier in the week already? That's why I've been monitoring her temp so closely. But she also had a formula bottle that day for the second time, so I chalked the incident up to that ... ??

Time for a mommy/daddy pow-wow. Perhaps a late afternoon ferry should be the goal ~ if everyone has energy and stays fever free? Hmmm ...

At 7:30 a.m., I have a headache. And it's not a hangover. What's up with that? You're supposed to get lots of sleep on vacations!

But then again, my goal this vacation was to spend as much quality one-on-one (three?) time with my kids as I could because I feel like I've been working so much ~ and I'm definitely getting my quality time. My other goal (equal importance) was to spend quality time with my hubby though, and THAT I am not getting as we've been juggling work and manipulating our hours - in between store runs for tylenol, mac-n-cheese, and gatorade. Between the two of us, with the kids home each day, we work from 8 to midnight at least then split the kids for nighttime duty. I haven't really seen him in a week.

Which is a great roundup and segway to the title of this post: lavender reminder. Thank you, Katie, for the lavender that sits in my kitchen and welcomed me this morning with brightness to remind me of the wonderful day it'll be and how lucky I am to have the opportunity to watch my children sleep, to listen to the birds twitter on our birdfeeders, and to watch the clouds outside burn through and the blue skies emerge ~ over the Islands or over our sick beds. And it's Saturday, so neither Kevin nor I needs to work.

But seriously, would everyone please get better so we can go camping and start our "vacation" already??

Milestones

It's been a busy milestone month!
  • Collin learned to "pump" his legs and swing by his self June 28th!
  • Owen learned to ride a tricycle two or three months ago and began riding a two-wheeler with training wheels on Father's Day! : ) (He's still working on the learning the concept of "brakes"!) Owen had his first and second bike crash within the week. : (
  • Kate, for the first time today, began reaching towards her toys in a controlled motion!
  • Kate also started flip-flopping this past month and is now pulling her legs up and getting onto her knees and elbows (often with her belly still flat on the ground!).
  • Kate went on her first camping trip over July 4th weekend (we all went up to my parent's property on Shaw ~ awesome!)
  • The boys pulled their first crab pots of the season!
  • Kate had a three-month check-up July 8: 12 pounds, 13 ounces (65%). She's tall for her weight (80%) and has a smallish head for her size (50%). In all developmental areas, she's excelling!
  • Owen is singing every letter of the "A,B,C"s and has adopted the song as his new favorite!
  • Owen started saying "I love you, too!"

Bittersweet Lunch - 7.21.08

In the span of an hour and a half, I had a Bittersweet Lunch yesterday ...

cleaned up Collin's throw up, changed Owen and Kate's poopy diapers, washed my hands eight time in half an hour, nursed Kate, sliced apples and cheese and turkey for mine and Owen's lunch, administered Tylenol suppositories ...

and that's it - I'm out. Back to court.

But I got to spend the entire lunch hour with my children on a weekday! It was priceless, and I loved every minute of it.

FaceBook

I am totally not sure if I "need" another "blog"ish outlet in my life, but I've been debating starting another blog for random conversation that's not "family" related (merely so you can read my thoughts? or I can document my thoughts? or I can toss my thoughts into the great unknown? anyway ...).

In the meantime - mostly because I wanted to check out Steve R's Facebook page! - I joined FaceBook (www.facebook.com). Feel free to add me as your friend if you join too!

**I will always maintain this blog site though ~ never fear!**

Flip-Flop

This is a quickie post for the baby book notes ... : )

Kate just flipped from her tummy to her back for the first time! Now she's flip-flopping both directions ... tummy to back and back to tummy! Congrats, Big Girl!

12 Weeks Old 7.1.08

Katelyn goes to work with Kevin and I every day. Our "office" is equipped with a jungle activity mat and a rain forest swing. It's always a party! Anyway, I just HAD to turn from an email I was drafting to take these pics. Kate was just watching me (laughing with/at me?) and being so darn cute!! It is sometimes so hard to stay on track ... I'm sure you can see why!

"Silly Man" 6.27.08

SCENE: We're in Grandma and Grandpa Y's house, and Kevin and I are getting ready to head out on a date with our friends Jacqui and Chris and getting ready to leave the kids with the folks. Collin wants something like candy or chocolate milk or something similar that I just can't remember, but it's just before dinner.

COLLIN (to me): Can I have ____, puh-lease? (Sweet smile.)

ME: I'm leaving. Grandma and Grandpa are in charge now, so you'll have to ask them. [I'm not about to sugar them up and then leave them! I'd like my parents to want to watch them again!]

COLLIN (to Grandma): Can I have ____, puh-lease? (Even sweeter smile.)

GRANDPA: Hey, Collin - you know, you might want to ask me instead. Sometimes Grandpa's bend rules and know how to make things like that happen! You know what I'm saying?

COLLIN (turning back to Grandma and snicker/chuckling): Silly Man. Can I have ____, Grandma?

Everyone busts up laughing!

The kicker is that he should have asked Grandpa - he'd probably have gotten the ____. : )

6.23.2008

Thank You, Silly Boy!

KEVIN: Hey, Boys, go outside to play baseball, ok?

COLLIN: Ok, we know the rules.

KEVIN: ... and close the door on your way out because it's cold outside. Thanks!

ME: Yeah, Brrrr! (What's up with this weather?!)

OWEN: O.K. --- Brrrr!

And he closed the SCREEN door.

Debbie's Baby Shower

Our friends Debbie and Steve are expecting their first daughter in August (we can't wait! congrats!), and Steve's sister Hannah and I hosted a baby shower for them at our home May 24. Afterwards, spouses and kids joined for a potluck BBQ. Deb and Steve made the long trek from Oregon, and we had a wonderful weekend! Here's just a few snapshots:

Me: What'd you do today, boys?
Collin: Sat around and thought, thought, thought.

Me: Owen, ________?
Owen: What. (not a question. a statement. every time you say his name. almost like, "What, Mom. Are you talking again and can it possibly be so important?" He's 2.)
Me: Owen, ________?
Owen: Oh. (not, "Oh, sorry, Mom ..." just oh. a statement in and of itself.)

Me: You can choose ____ or _____.
Collin: Well, either way, I win. Now I know what you are talking about. Either way.
*Collin went through an "actually" phase last year when every was "actually" this and "actually" that. Now, everything is "either way."

Collin: Mom, Baby Kate doesn't hardly have any eyebrows. When she gets bigger, she'll get them. She doesn't have a brain either. I have a brain sometimes. When I remember to use it. Either way ...

Collin: Does Baby Kate have any talent? I have lots of talent. Especially in my legs. And my bowling arm. (Then later.) Oooh. Hurt my bowling arm. I have to take care of it.
